Every year 15th March is celebrated as the World Consumer Rights Day. World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by President John F Kennedy, who sent a special message to the US Congress on 15th March 1962, in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. He was the first world leader to do so. The consumer movement first marked that date in 1983 and now uses the day every year to mobilize action on important issues and campaigns.
Every one of us is a consumer. Even if one is a producer of some commodity he is a consumer of a variety of goods and services. In 1960 S presidential election J.F. kenedy said that “Consumer is a center point of every enterprise and yet in the present day economy, he is the most neglected factor. In fact, consumer is the most important and key factor in the marketing process. His strength is his purchasing power. If consumers get united, they can stop the injustice and malpractices perpetuated by the producer and sellers”.
Need for consumer protection
The importance of consumer protection has considerably increased due to the changing role of the Government/ state. Overall change in the global environment has created a need for developing safeguard mechanism for the consumer protection of the consumer is pre-requisite for the proper functioning of the economic system. This can help ensure credibility and legitimacy.
Consumer consciousness is growing at an increasing speed in India. In recent years, increasing public concern over consumer protection has been observed in India and all over the world. A social moment has indeed begun which energizes consumers, promote consumers consciousness and educates the consumers.
